Gossip

Rumours Confirmed: Fifteen-year-old pop songstress Leslie Carter has been released from her contract with Dreamworks Records - and is none too upset about the ordeal.
*October 25

Fans of fifteen-yer-old rising pop star Leslie Carter have been quick to deny the rumours that their favourite Carter has been dropped from Dreamworks Records. "Why would they do that?" says nineteen-year-old fan Alicia. "So many fans are anxious for her CD to be released. They wouldn't drop her from the label before releasing her CD!"

The CD Alicia speaks of is entitled "Like, Wow", and was recorded almost two years ago in studios in Boston, Los Angeles, and Tampa. It contains bubbly pop songs, much like those of Epic recording artist Mandy Moore. Its debut single, also titled "Like, Wow" was released to airwaves in early 2001, and made its way to the top of the Radio Disney and Hitlist charts (in the United States and Canada, respectively). Leslie has successfully toured with both the All That & More Music Festival (Summer 2000) and the TeeNick Tour (Summer 2001), all the while sitting on the release of her album.

Fans have been keeping track of the album's whereabouts. Originally set to launch in June of 2000, the album was pushed back numerous times. Sources say Dreamworks representatives wanted to test Leslie's fan base, and make sure that the album would be successful once released. The teen pop princess market is highly competitive, and they were unsure how their newest act would fare when compared with the likes of Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. "Leslie can't compete with them vocally," says one source. "Her songs are cute and catchy, and she has talent, but she can't perform like Britney can, and she doesn't have the range that Jessica does. It's a natural thing - you can't teach someone to sing like that." Leslie also doesn't have the typical pop princess look: She's not a perfect size 0, with a dark tan and long blonde hair. In today's music business, it's all about performance and appearance.

Perhaps there is some validity to the label's claim that Leslie may not have a future in the business as it is today - but try and tell that to her fans.

"God, they're so superficial!" says fifteen-year-old Lisa. "It's not about what she looks like, it's about her music! So what if she doesn't look like a Barbie like Britney does! She's her own person, and she's the right size for someone her age. I think she's beautiful. You don't have to be stick thin and sleeping with Justin Timberlake to be beautiful."

Fourteen-year-old Allison shares Lisa's sentiments: "It doesn't matter what Dreamworks thinks, it's the fans that matter. And Leslie has a huge fan base! She's been touring so much, and everyone knows who she is. They made a bad move, because the label that gets Leslie now is going to make a huge amount of money!"

What does Leslie herself think? She's already a shaky introduction to the business, with the lack of support of the label and other people involved in her career. The enjoyment of shooting her first video is shadowed with memories about director Gregory Dark's comments on her looks, and her memories of touring are clouded with being pulled from younger brother Aaron's US tour last spring after a month of rehearsal - three days before the tour was set to begin.

We were unable to get official comments from Leslie, her family, her management, or the label, but we did speak to several people close to her, who say she's dealing with this setback with a smile. A friend of the family put it best: "Dreamworks was anything but supportive. She knows she's better off without them. They wanted her to fit into the mold of singers like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, and that's not who Leslie is. She wants to do things her own way, and she's not going to conform her ideals to fit into what someone else wants her to be."

Good. We need some originality in the music business.
